New York City is a giant city commonly known as “The Big Apple”. It is also the most populated city in the United States. Altogether, approximately 8.2 million people live there. As a matter of fact, each of the city’s five boroughs are bigger than many famous cities around the world.
Manhattan is an island located between the Hudson and East Rivers. It is a global hub for finance, politics, communications, film, music, fashion, and culture. In fact, many world-class museums, art galleries, and theaters are found on Manhattan. Similarly, many of the world’s largest corporations have their headquarters there. Even the United Nations is located in Manhattan.

New York City has a humid continental climate. Summer is hot and humid (Jun-Sep), Autumn is cool and dry (Sep-Dec), Winter is cold (Dec-Mar), and Spring tends to be wet (Mar-Jun). The average high for January is around 38°F (3°C). In comparison, the average high for July is 84°F (29°C).
New York's population is very diverse. The city's ethnic heritage has influenced neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs. In New York you can find Chinatown, Little Italy, Jewish communities on the Lower East Side, Chassidic communities in Borough Park, Crown Heights and Williamsburg. Whereas, Harlem remains a center of African-American culture. East (Spanish) Harlem is a large Hispanic neighborhood, and Brooklyn's Greenpoint is famous for its Polish community. You find most of New York's landmarks in Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty stands atop a small island in the harbor. Wall Street is home to the New York Stock Exchange. Nearby is the National September 11 Memorial at the World Trade Center Site. Connecting Lower Manhattan to Downtown Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Bridge offers fantastic views. You find the Empire State and Chrysler buildings in Midtown. Nearby is the headquarters of United Nations overlooking the East River. Rockefeller Plaza and Radio City Music Hall are also located in this area. Midtown West is the tourist center of New York and includes Times Square. Just to the north is Central Park.
Three large and several smaller airports serve New York City. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey are large international airports. Additionally, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is a busy domestic airport. You can easily spend a lot of time in New York standing in line. This is often unnecessary. Avoid the Empire State Building during the day. It is open late and is usually empty. Skip the Statue of Liberty tour. The Staten Island Ferry goes right past Lady Liberty! Avoid the Guggenheim on Monday as it is one of the only museums open that day. Also, buses and taxis are the slowest way to go crosstown during rush-hour. You are often better off walking or taking the subway.
Broadway is famous for its shows and musicals. TKTS online offers tickets for shows the same night at discounted prices. TKTS has two offices, one at Times Square with lines hours long, and a much faster one at South Street Seaport. Only cash is accepted at South Street.
You can find almost every type of food imaginable in New York. There are thousands of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. However, be wary of restaurants around Times Square or near the Empire State Building - many are tourist traps.
While most restaurants accept credit cards, some smaller restaurants, particularly in Chinatown and Williamsburg, do not. Others have a minimum purchase amount for credit/debit cards.
Here is some helpful information on tipping: Hairdressers: 15-20%, Bartenders: $1 per drink or 15-20% of total, Food delivery: $2-5, 15-20% for larger orders, Tour guides $5-$10, Taxis: Tips of 10-20% are expected in yellow cabs. Always tip more for better service (for example, if the cabbie helps you with your bags). Leave a small tip if the service is lousy (for example, if the cabbie refuses to turn on the air conditioning). For livery cabs, tip 10-20% depending on the quality of the service..
