Flushing might seem like a weird name, but it used to be called something quite different. The neighborhood was originally named Vlissingen after a city in the Netherlands. However, people soon shortened it to "Vlishing." As many of the early residents were actually British, the name was soon changed to the more English sounding "Flushing”.

Flushing is also well known internationally as the home of TV character, Fran Fine, better known as The Nanny. The Nanny ran from 1993 – 1999 and was shown in more than 80 countries around the world.
