Zoni Brooklyn and Passaic are now SEVP Certified!
Even though Zoni campuses have been closed in order to keep you safe from Covid-19, exciting things have been happening! Not only did we celebrate 29 years of Zoni Language Centers, two of our campuses, Brooklyn and Passaic have been certified by SEVP. This blog post will explain what that means, the things these campuses can offer as a result of their SEVP approval, and finally will give you some information about the campuses, the surrounding areas and why you should study there.
What is SEVP?
SEVP stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Program. SEVP is a program run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). To become SEVP certified schools must pass a comprehensive application process that includes providing all kinds of different information and a visit where the school is checked.
What does SEVP certified mean?
Having a SEVP certificate means a school is allowed to issue Forms I-20, "Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status," to international students after they have enrolled and been accepted for a program of study. These students then use the Form I-20 to apply for their F-1 visa to study as a full-time student in the United States. In order to keep their SEVP certificate, schools must abide by all SEVP policies, as well as maintain detailed records and report regularly back to SEVP. This means that you can be sure that SEVP certified schools are great places to study!
This is very exciting because up until now these campuses were only allowed to enrol domestic students. Many international students were interested in these campuses, but unfortunately were not allowed to enrol there. Now, after SEVP certification, international students are able to enroll to study in Brooklyn or Passaic!!!
Both our Brooklyn and Passaic campuses have been open for a while. However, sometimes, it takes time for SEVP to process an application. In addition, schools can only make an application once they are already holding classes. That’s why this process seemed to take a long time.
Why should I choose Zoni Brooklyn or Passaic?
All Zoni campuses are great places to study, but here are some more reasons why you should choose our Brooklyn or Passaic campus.
Welcome to Brooklyn!
You find our Brooklyn campus at 2148 Ocean Drive, a 6-minute walk to the nearest subway station. There are also a lot of bus stops nearby meaning it is extremely easy to get to school from anywhere in New York! The campus itself has a great mix of nationalities and is known for its lively atmosphere. At Zoni Brooklyn you not only receive amazing English classes delivered by top quality teachers, you are also in a great (and exciting) part of New York!
Here are some of the attractions and facilities near the campus:
Brooklyn Public Library
This is literally across from the street from the campus! The library offers a huge range of resources!
Brighton beach (20 minutes)
Brighton Beach is a neighborhood in the southern part of Brooklyn. From the Zoni campus it takes around 20mins to get there. Brighton Beach is actually part of the greater Coney Island area. It is known for its Russian and Eastern Europeans communities (and delicious
restaurants), and as a great place to visit in summer for a beach day.
Prospect Park (40 minutes)
Known as Brooklyn’s ‘Central Park’, Prospect Park is actually only the second largest park in Brooklyn! The park’s attractions include: the 90-acre Long Meadow, Litchfield Villa, Prospect Park Zoo, the Boathouse, and Brooklyn's only lake!
New York Aquarium (30 minutes)
The New York Aquarium is the oldest continually operating aquarium in the United States. Located on Surf Avenue, the aquarium is only 30 mins from the Brooklyn campus. The aquarium has an enormous range of animals including seals, penguins, sharks, octopi and so many more! One great thing about the New York Aquarium is that on Wednesday afternoons you can “pay-what-you-wish”. This means the regular entrance fees do not apply and you pay as much as you can.
Passaic is waiting for you!
Passaic is a great place to live and study! Passaic is in New Jersey and our campus is Main Avenue, which as the name suggests is in the heart of the city! The campus is modern and bright and, like all Zoni campuses, has students from all over the world!
There are bus stops and buses covering tons of routes within a few minutes of our campus. In fact, if you wanted to visit Manhattan it is less than an hour to Times Square or Midtown! However, if you want to stay nearby, here are a few of our favourite local attractions:
Garret Mountain Reservation (less than an hour away)
Garret Mountain is Passaic County's most popular recreational area. In the reservation you can find fields, walking/running trails, basketball courts, picnic areas, a pond for fishing as well as an Equestrian Center where you can take horse riding lessons. Garret Mountain is also known for attracting migrating songbirds. It is an extremely popular spot for birdwatchers and provides an opportunity to see over 150 species of birds throughout the year.
Lambert Castle (40 minutes)
Lambert Castle was originally called Belle Vista and is located in the Garret Mountain Reservation. Lambert Castle was built in 1892 as the home of Catholina Lambert who wanted a home built to look like a British castle. In the late 1990s, the Castle was converted into a
museum and library.
The Paterson Museum (40 minutes)
The Paterson Museum focuses on Passaic County’s industrial past. However, it also has a number of other interesting and quirky artefacts. It is most famous for its collection of old guns, Native American artefacts, gemstones, old trains, paintings and a vast collection of medicine from the 1900s. On top of this, they have hundreds of old medicine caps!
We are extremely happy to now be able to welcome international students to both of these wonderful campuses! If you have any questions or would like to enroll, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to welcoming you to Zoni!
